Her buried dreams

Rekha wiped off the beads of sweat from her forehead as she switched off the lights of the kitchen. It was a heavy day for her today. There were guests from morning who came up to visit her bedridden mother in law. Rekha like a good daughter in law welcomed all of them happily.
She opened the cupboard to take her night clothes. There fell a photograph. It was her photograph in bharatnatyam costume from her college days. She looked young, energetic and her eyes shone with enthusiasm. She looked at herself in the mirror and found that she has changed. She looked tired, bored and her eyes didn't have any spark left. She again looked at the photograph and smiled.
"I would never compromise my bharatnatyam for anyone. I will find a husband who will support my passion." Rekha used to tell her friends during college days. Now she thought how naive and innocent she was back then. She got married to Ram, soon after her graduation. Though it was an arranged marriage, Ram had promised Rekha to support her. But as time passed he became helpless. His mother got bedridden and without any other way Rekha had to give up on her dreams. Then she got busy with her children .Amidst all these she almost forgot about her dream. Today, when she saw the photograph a lone tear escaped from her eyes.
It didn't take her much time to learn that a woman always had to compromise her dreams for others. She scarifices everything for others and never gets anything in return. After marriage her life always revolves around her husband, his family and her children. In between all these her happiness and her wishes always gets buried. And if at all a woman starts thinking about herself she is tagged as selfish. While on the other hand, if a man wants to pursue his passion after marriage he is encouraged. But its never the same when it comes to a woman. This society is and will always be biased. No matter how far we reach but some things never change.

Rekha kept the photograph back. She sighed at her fate and like every other woman she kept quiet.Yet one more woman buried her dream to keep others happy and alive!
