The surprise

"Why isn't Sara picking up my call?" - Aru frowned at herself. Aru caught an auto and went to Sara's accommodation. She found it locked. Now Aru started getting worried. Sara never behaved like this.
She rang the doorbell next door, who happened to be Mrs. Fernandes, Sara's neighbour. Mrs. Fernandes opened the door and gave her a warm smile.

"Hello aunty, do you know where Sara has gone? She isn't picking up my calls since two days and I checked the door it seemed to be locked. Do you know anything?" Aru asked in one go.

"Don't you know? Sara is admitted in the hospital. " Mrs. Fernandes  replied softly. Aru felt like someone has pulled the ground beneath her legs. She felt like her throat had dried up. She asked about the hospital address and left from there.

Aru's heart pained to see her best friend, Sara between those tubes and monitors. Why did she have to hide this from me? Aru thought to herself.

Sara's mother sensing Aru's emotions spoke, - "She wanted it to be a surprise like always. It was breast cancer."

Aru's mind started going back to their school days. Sara and she became friends when they were in the ninth standard. From there on, they became best friends and inseparable. Now they were in their final year graduation. Sara loved to give surprises. Sometimes she would text Aru that she wouldn't be coming to the college and surprise her by coming. Sometimes she would bring Aru's favourite dessert and surprise her. Aru's birthday would be special every year because Sara would never fail to surprise her with her ideas. She would decorate the room so beautifully and arrange a party. Aru always considered herself lucky to have Sara in her life.

"You know when I die that too would be a surprise for you." Sara always said. Aru would slap her arm when she would say that. Deep down she always prayed that day would never come.

After a while, the doctors came out of the room and shook their heads. Sara's mother broke down and started wailing. Her father became numb. Aru fell down on the bench nearby and held the bench tightly for support. This was a very big surprise for Aru on her birthday which she would never forget.
